Celebrating My Flatland Home - part two

Around sunset on this Tuesday evening, Marilyn and I walked in Meadowbrook Park, one of our very favorite places here in Champaign-Urbana.  Along the path to the south, we came across a cyclist headed the other way who had stopped and was looking into the prairie, smiling. He had spotted a deer.  After the deer bounded away, we had a cheerful conversation about deer and coyotes and foxes before continuing around the park. Along the way, we overheard people speaking different languages,  people of different races. When we rounded the curve on the eastern edge of the park, we were able to watch the sun set.

The thistle in the prairie was particularly vibrant at dusk.

I love the expanse of black-eyed Susan that lines both sides of the Hickman Wildflower Walk at Meadowbrook Park.

Before the park, we stopped at the Tuesday evening farmers' market in downtown Champaign, where the farmers have become familiar and where I often run into friends. I'm glad Marilyn was able to join me today. Here's our haul, all from Meyer Produce out of Villa Grove. (We learned that it takes three people about four hours every other day to harvest the raspberries at this farm.  I'll make sure to savor every berry!)

Celebrating My Flatland Home

I visited some lovely places this summer including Saugatuck-Douglas on Lake Michigan and Peggy's Cove on the rugged coast of Nova Scotia. I relished being by the water. I was present, I was appreciative--and I was always glad to come back to my flatland home. Familiar walking paths, enormous skies, and corn along the roadways welcomed me back to the unassuming Midwest and grounded me.

Here are some photos taken in one of my favorite places in Champaign-Urbana, the Idea Garden along Lincoln Avenue:

This photo and the next one were taken in the Idea Garden in 2014, during a plein air painting class I took through Community Education at Parkland College. The class was a lovely invitation to pay attention.
